Character Name: Henry Sturges
Age: 400+
Canon: Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter / The Last American Vampire.
Canon Point: End of Last American Vampire (2015ish)
Character History:
Henry was born on March 2, 1563, in England, to a ferryman; he grew up in poverty; his father wanted Henry to follow in his footsteps and become a ferryman. However, Henry had other ideas and found himself an apprenticeship with the blacksmith, which would slightly raise his class, but not by much. Around the age of 24, he fell deeply in Love with Edvia, a much higher-class girl than he was, and she loved him deeply in return. Her parents deeply disapproved of the match. They married anyway and left on the ship bound for the Roanoke Colony

On the voyage to the colony, Henry notices the ship is oddly devoid of rats; then, people start to die of a mysterious illness. This raises a minor curiosity in Henry, as the ship's doctor couldn't identify the condition.

See link for Roanoke Colony; as they wait for the return of the supply ship, months turn into years; there are rough patches, but after a horrid year, things seem to start to settle. Things begin to sour when it appears a native kills one of the settlers; this is, however, later found out by Henry not to be the case. The sickness starts to take people again; this causes great concern for Henry as Edeva is now eight months pregnant with what would be their first child.

As the sickness gets worse, one night, Henry hears a commotion in the village. He opens the door and sees Crowly in his true vampiric form, killing the whole colony, soaked in the blood of Henry's and Edeva's friends. Henry grabs a small number of supplies and runs with Edeva into the woods, thinking if they could make it to the water, they could make it to safety; this was not the case. Crowly catches them quickly, slamming Edeva into a tree and attacking Henry, deciding to turn him so he won't be the only Englishman in the new world. The first sounds Henry hears as he is turning are the sound of Crowly killing Edeva and the heartbeats of her and their unborn child stopping. He holds her hand as she dies, and he slips into the darkness of his new life. Henry had attempted to carve Crowly's name into a tree before passing out; Crowly was able to stop him and change it to Croatoan, forever wrapping the event in mystery.

To keep Henry with him, he tells Henry he has much to learn from him, but the true factor in keeping Henry around is Crowly having kept the baby Virginia Dare alive.

However, it's not long before Henry escapes with Virginia and takes shelter with one of the tribes, fighting for them, protecting and caring for Virginia he has taken in as his adopted daughter. As the years move on and Virginia comes of age, the relationship changes and shifts into something inappropriate a few years after her first period. He ends up losing control and turning her; the change in the relationship and turning her became Henry's greatest shame and guilt. She doesn't handle the change and sinks into the madness that can befall young vampires in the first year or two of their new life.

This even changes Henry, putting him on a path to use his curse to help humans, to help the world for the better. He leaves the tribes and starts to travel, looking for new settlements, learning self-control, and looking for others like him, both in vampirism and mindset.

Canon Abilities:

Henry is a vampire, speed, strength, agility, proficient with firearms and bladed weapons. Henry has some precog abilities, but the precognition doesn't show a clear picture of what will happen, just vague clues and feelings about people. Like how he knew Abe had a great purpose but couldn't clearly see what that purpose was. He can also read people really well, but that's nothing spooky. Vampires from his book series are day walkers; their eyes never adjust to sunlight, so they must wear sunglasses; without some sunscreen, they can get ill in the sunlight, or it will slowly weaken them if they aren't well fed. During the night, however, due to his age, Henry would be reasonably powerful. The ways to kill a vampire are beheading or burning alive; depending on the age, it could take both.

Inventory: Sunglasses, a thick paper journal, pen

πŸ¦‹ Personality

Option 1: Answer the following questions. Elaborate on the answer, especially your character's thoughts and feelings surrounding the answer. For Canon Characters, you can choose four questions. For Original Characters, you will need to choose six questions. Keep the word count to 150-400 per question.

  1. Has your character always believed in magic? Do they have something influencing their perspective on the supernatural/metaphysical/spiritual from their past? How do they feel about magic?

  2. He didn't believe in witchcraft, as they would have called it in his time as a human, as he was born in the middle of Queen Elizabeth's reign; his parents would have either been Catholic or Protestant; it's never made clear in the books. So, given the era where someone of his class wasn't even allowed to read religious texts, talking about the supernatural was the best way to literally lose your head.

Now, after his turning, he has a far more open mind to what else could be out there. He still believes in heaven, hell, and god, but he knows he is not heaven-bound because of all that he has done.

But he also realizes that there could be more than just vampires out in the world, even if he hasn't encountered them.

Because as the bard said: β€œThere are more things in Heaven and Earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy.”

  3. What mythological creature would your character most like to be? Which do they identify with? Which would they dread being? Feel free to use our Bestiary for reference.

  4. Since Henry is already a vampire, he is very comfortable being one and wouldn't want to change that; calling him a mythical creature would give him a chuckle. But if he were to pick something else, given his love of literature and art, he would want to be a muse, inspire people to greatness, and help feed new things in the world.

Evidence of this can actually be found within the text as he brings Abe's journals, then his own, to the ‘ struggling author that writes the book containing Abe's story, then the book containing Henry's story, so the world would have some idea, even if they believed it was fictional about Abraham's real life, Henry's long life.

If there were one creature Henry wouldn't want to be, is a werewolf. He worked so hard on controlling his nature as a vampire he couldn't imagine suffering with one where he had no control over what he did during the full moon. Also, as someone who cares deeply for those he is friends with, it hurts him to even think about ignoring or being cold to those he loves. Because of how hard he fought to maintain parts of his humanity, the thought of losing that would trouble him deeply.

  5. If there's one person your character would follow to another realm, who would it be and why? If there's no one, state that and explain why.

  6. Abraham, he would follow Abraham to the ends of the earth and back. He holds a deep and undying affection for that man, on the same level he has for Edeva.

He would want to continue the adventures they had before his passing at the hands of Virginia Dare.

To take their long lives and move between worlds would be endlessly fascinating to him, and while he will forever have love in his heart for Edeva, he could not imagine taking that kind of adventure with anyone other than Abraham.

Their bond was one of friendship before Henry turned him, and while they had a rough patch when they finally came back together, they eventually fell back into the closeness they had during and before The Civil War.

He also feels that Abraham would enjoy the adventure more than any other person he's ever had in his life, and there is no one he would rather have by his side than Abraham.

  7. If you'd like pixies to change one event in your character's life, what would it be and why?

  8. Henry would be torn between two things: saving Edeva and never having slept with and turned Virginia Dare. Given the canon point from which Henry is coming into the game, he would end up deciding never to sleep with or turn Virginia Dare; it's his greatest shame, not only because it was an abuse of his place in her life.

Also, after a long time, he's realized that while he lost Edeva, and after the guilt from not being able to save her and his unborn child lessened but never went away, he knows that he's done the best he can with his curse, even after the monstrous speed bump that was his relationship Virgina.

The choice he made with Virginia led to the death of so many people; if he hadn't turned her, he could have saved the pain and havoc she caused in so many people's lives.

Including the death of JFK, which kicked the country off the hopeful path he and Abraham had fought so long to keep the country on.

He would also still more than likely have Abraham in his life.

So while he longs for the life he could have had with Edeva, he knows what damage his choice with Virginia caused, and he can't focus on the what if when he knows what damage turning Virginia wreaked.
